Ventilation is undertaken for patients with respiratory failure who would almost certainly die without support. The study acknowledges that some patients died of pneumonia that was resistant to treatment; it does not support the contention that ventilators killed patients. https://www.jci.org/articles/view/170682

I’m not an MD but I’m a licensed medical professional. The idea behind proning is that by laying on your stomach, you allow for more lung surface area to participate in gas exchange due to our anatomy. More gas exchange = better oxygenation. And a patient is supposed to alternate between prone and supine, I believe every 4 hours. It’s a coordinated effort with the staff.
