When Jesus walked this earth, there was nothing He did, said, or thought that was not in tandem with His Heavenly Father. As a result, His mission was accomplished and His ministry impacted the entire world. Likewise, as we seek to live the Christian life, we must do so with complete dependence on the Lord. Abraham Lincoln's Proclamation of Thanksgiving

On October 3, 1863, President Lincoln issued a proclamation designating “the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving.” Lincoln’s announcement marked the culmination of a multi-decade campaign by Sarah Josepha Hale to make Thanksgiving into a national holiday. Although Lincoln wrote the vast majority of his state papers, the Thanksgiving Proclamation was in fact drafted by Seward.

A Proclamation.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.

In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the United States the Eighty-eighth.

Notable European canals include: Charlemagne oversaw in 793 A.D. the first artificial canal in Western Europe at Fossa Carolina, from the Rhine River basin to the Danube River basin; Britain's Glastonbury Canal was built in the 10th century; Italy's Naviglio Canal, from the Ticino River to Milan, took over a century to complete, 1157-1258; England's Exeter Canal was constructed in the 1560s; Netherlands, Flanders and Belgium constructed a dense system of canals, mostly in the 1600s; France's Canal de Briare, connecting the Loire and Seine Valleys, was completed in 1642; Germany built canals in the 18th century, on the rivers Spree, Elbe, Havel, Ems, Elster, Dahme, Oder, and Weser;

Russia's canals were pioneered by Peter the Great, who built the Vyshny Volochyok Waterway, 1703-1722, connecting Saint Petersburg with the Baltic Sea, and later expanded in the 19th century to the White Sea.

Some early canals in the United States included: Cut River, 1636, connecting Plymouth Harbor with Marshfield on Green Harbor; South Hadley Canal, opened in 1795, bypassing Great Falls at South Hadley, Massachusetts, on the Connecticut River; Santee Canal, opened in 1800, 22 miles between Charleston and Columbia, South Carolina; Dismal Swamp Canal, opened in 1805, 22 miles between Virginia and North Carolina;

Erie Canal, opened in 1825, was 363 miles from Albany, New York, on the Hudson River, to Buffalo on Lake Erie. At the time, it was the second longest canal in the world after China's Grand Canal.

Wabash and Erie Canal, opened in 1843, was 497 miles, the longest canal in North America. It connected the Great Lakes to the Ohio River, which then flowed into the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. Idaho Irrigation Canals, begun by the Milner and Minidoka Dams along the Snake River, 1906-1910, quickly transformed the sagebrush landscape, once crossed by settlers on the California and Oregon Trails, into a fertile agricultural "Magic Valley." Together with canals along the Boise River, Idaho produces one-third of the nation's potatoes.

The Future of Austrian Economics | Murray N. Rothbard

This is the famous speech by Murray Rothbard given in the days following the collapse of the Soviet empire. His exuberance is palpable has he explains the meaning of it all for the place of liberty in the history of civilization. A brilliant scholar and passionate defender of Liberty, Professor Murray Rothbard (1926-1995) was dean of the Austrian School of economics, holder of the S.J. Hall Chair at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Academic Vice President of the Ludwig von Mises Institute. The author of 17 books and thousands of articles, the foremost Misesian economist, the father of modern freedom theory, and the most delightful personality in the profession, this great teacher here spellbinds an audience of students, faculty, and business leaders in the "Future of Austrian Economics," at the 1990 Mises University at Stanford. Only Austrian economics, Rothbard shows, can explain the collapse of socialism/communism and tell us what should replace it: laissez-faire capitalism. There is a lesson here as well, he shows, for dealing with the Leviathan in Washington, D.C.

The sixth flight test of Starship is targeted to launch on Tuesday, November 19. The 30-minute launch window will open at 4:00 p.m. CT. The test aims to expand the envelope on ship and booster capabilities and get closer to bringing the reuse of the entire system online. Objectives include the booster once again returning to the launch site for the catch, reigniting a ship Raptor engine while in space, and testing a suite of heatshield experiments and maneuvering changes for ship reentry and descent over the Indian Ocean.
